Alan Hardcastle is an artist who finds inspiration for his work in his native landscape. His drawings and paintings evoke the bleak beauty of the Pennines and capture its atmospheric qualities through the use of strong motifs and an edgy use of colour.
He was born in Halifax in 1944 but moved to Leeds in his early teens. Aged 16 he left school to study fine art for 5 years at Leeds College of Art. He then did a one-year Post-Graduate course in Art Education at Hornsey College of Art in London.
After 30 years of teaching Art and Design in colleges and schools he retired in 2002. Since then he has worked as a professional artist and recently had a successful solo exhibition at Smith Art Gallery, Brighouse in April 2009.
He now lives in Bradford with his wife Janet and three cats.
